Context
Arizona State University’s Pocket Project set out to build a ledger-based product ecosystem for education, spanning a mobile application and a technical developer website where outside teams could explore services, review APIs, download SDKs, and jump straight into GitHub repositories. A platform like that lives or dies on its documentation, and ASU engaged SproutVest to lead the end-to-end documentation and technical content strategy for both surfaces.
The challenge
The documentation had to serve very different readers at once. Developers needed precise, accurate coverage of every service, API, and SDK. Students and research partners needed the same engineering concepts explained without the assumed background. Keeping the content truthful as the product evolved required continuous feedback loops with multiple technology teams, and the whole effort had to run remotely, across distributed teams, without the coordination losses that usually come with that.
What we did
SproutVest directed the creation of the full documentation suite, covering the mobile app, the APIs, the SDKs, and the underlying services, and kept it synchronized with the product as it changed. We structured the developer website around how developers actually explore a new platform, making it straightforward to navigate from a concept to the relevant SDK to the GitHub repository behind it.
To keep quality consistent as the suite grew, we established templates, workflows, and style guidelines that any contributor could follow. The project ran on an agile cadence of sprints, feedback cycles, and transparent progress reporting, which kept the distributed ASU teams aligned without a single in-person meeting.
Results
The Pocket Project launched with a documentation hub that worked as a single source of truth for everyone building on the platform:
- Full documentation coverage across the mobile app, technical website, APIs, and SDKs
- A developer portal with structured navigation and direct GitHub integration
- Standardized templates and style guidelines that kept future documentation consistent
- Delivered entirely remotely, on time, across distributed teams
